We should learn from the Japanese earthquake the way the Japanese handle the situation

This is a try to translate what I got from my friend from China. I think we need to examine our educational system and learn from the Japanese experience on how we should deal with unexpected disasters. This is something Japanese should be proud of themselves and that is something we all should learn. We should learn how the Japanese teach our children and how they are so un-selfishly handle big disaster like that with dignity and without fear.

Although suffered from earthquake and tsunami, the Japanese still stays unity with respect and discipline the value of helping each other. The subway stations and convenience stores were lined up with people who were patiently waiting for their turn without fighting, arguing, or looting. School hall is a safe haven for the victims, solid beams of the structure can be seen, no one doubts the quality of the structure. Chinese Internet users see the distant crack of Japan and the way the Japanese handle the situation, raised their thumbs on Japan. Three years ago, Sichuan’s disaster was devastating.

After the earthquake, the subway was no servicing. Many people cannot go home, hundreds of people lining up to wait for their turn to buy the ticket. No one was complaining. A reporter asked one old lady waiting at the line up about the schedule. She quietly answered that the service was cancelled. At the airport, people lined up and many sit on the sides of the stairway to allow others to pass through.

Free Curry rice and Pops at the restaurants and Pop machines.

Many schools along the transit line of Tokyo voluntarily opened for the public for those who were not able to go home. The schools provided over thousands of blankets in a orderly manner. There is no price hike at the Hotels, They even change their sign to “sanctuary” for free accommodation. Stores owners did not think of making more money but having the restaurant chefs stay and cook free curry rice, electrical appliance shop offers free mobile phone recharge. Soda machine are free and the public telephone are free for all calls.

Japanese Internet users leave a message after the earthquake: “We must assist the evacuation of foreigners who do not speak Japanese, even if you only say『 Hello, OK 』would do. Internet users remind each other: “To care for the elderly women in particular, ask them if their neighbor is alone? Remember to knock on the door, “” Please tell your friends who are not able to go home, tell them the free accommodations at the following places… ”

“Earthquake stopped and no rubbish on the ground”

After the disaster in Christchurch, New Zealand, there have been looted, business substantially raise the prices of goods. In comparison, both as a developed country, Tokyo did not show such cases. Of course, Tokyo is not the hardest hit, so they did not collapse into a state of law and order disaster. Chinese Internet users witnessed the Japanese flight, on-line wrote: “hundreds of people waited in the square suspension when earthquake stopped. For the whole process, no one smoking, the store attendant came to send blankets, hot water, biscuits. Men help women carry things, turn on the radio, after 3 hours, the people scattered, the ground has no waste or rubbish. ”

A Chinese worker who works at the convenience store in Japan left a message: “My mother asked me:『 whether the store increased the fare to take advantage of the earthquake? 』 “Not ah. I work at 7-11, free food and drink, no looting. People took free food will thank you for the queue at the checkout.” “Mainland netizens (people who go on the Internet) also remembered the 5.12 2008 Sichuan earthquake: ” School ah school, for Japanese schools is the most solid haven, which requires us to learn. Chinese school … ah … ”

Zhang Hongyan: Japanese knows how to look after the whole picture
News anchor, Zhang Hongyan, who studied in Japan, personal experienced the 1995 magnitude 7.2 Kobe earthquakes. She remembered the quality of the humanities in Japan when facing disasters. Zhang Hongyan believes that the Japanese looks into the “big picture”, “Everything the Japanese do, they, will consider the impact of others. For example, people do not talk on the phone in the subway. For natural disasters, Japanese were well-trained with high mental quality of well being that played a key role on how they function without fear and undisciplined. In addition to self-help, they also did not forget to save others’ lives. ”

In her view, because the Japanese pays attention to the “big picture “, the world can see their talents and glorious humanity from their help to each other in the unyielding face of disaster.

Earthquake Proof Housing

Debris from Tsunami in Japan

Earthquake is Everywhere. Is your home safe from earthquake?

It is sad to hear all the bad news from New Zealand, China, Japan, Chile, Haiti, Pakistan, Indonesia, where they have massive earthquake that destructed many houses and buildings. Many people die from the disaster. The survivors left without a home and lost all their belongings. There is something wrong about the building industry. Why do they build something that can protect people’s lives and properties especially in areas where there is high risk from natural disasters like earthquake and Tsunami?

I am not an expert on buildings or structural designs. However, with common sense, I can see problems with some of the traditional wooden, concrete or brick buildings when there are earthquakes or Tsunami. Surely earthquake can shake loose the wooden frame structure, joints of the bricks will fall apart, and light layer concrete can also be broken up as we can see from videos in the news. People get killed by the falling floors or flying objects from the earthquake.

Traditional buildings have many other draw backs from what I can think of:

a. With Concrete – if you do not put the proper coating on the surface, the water moisture can get through the wall. I remember the days when I was in Hong Kong. During the high humidity months, we can see water drops from the inside of the wall. Of course, now with air conditioning you can draw the moisture away. However, think for those who are poor and cannot afford or even have proper electricity. They will suffer from the high humidity. Only if they have the proper rebar inside the cement, they will not be able to stand earthquake.

Concrete is heavy. During earthquake, it may fall on and kill people.

b. With Bricks – similar to concrete, as brick joints will crack and fall apart during earthquake. It is solid and can kill people with its weight and hardness.

c. Wood frame – They will shake and fall apart if the joints of the frame are not reinforced for earthquake.

All these structure will need proper insulation to protect from the weather, water or moisture so this will require additional work and material for the insulation.

Well, I know a company just have the solution for the housing industry for earthquake and other disasters like: Hurricane, Typhoon, Flooding and bad weathers. At the same time, it is low cost and quick to build. Once a city has been destructed by earthquake, it would need to be rebuilt quickly. Murchtech modular homes are the perfect solution. Build a house that can stand virtually anything.

The cost of housing is too expensive. We need to cut down the costs so the poor can have a decent place to live. Only when people have a stable place to live, they can then concentrate on building their wealth to have a better life from themselves and their family.

After the earthquakes, we need to try to recover as quickly as possible. We need to provide a home for the homeless quickly. What is the best effective way to build a durable house within a few days that can stand the earthquake at a low cost?

There is a Chinese saying: You can only grow with a strong root. Home is our root. Without a home, how can we have the foundation to build up our family?

Murchtech has The Solution.

Murchtech designs modular homes for many good reasons:

1. Low cost – less than half of the wood frames houses.
2. No wood so we can save the trees
3. Quick to assemble – Yes, you can assemble the house together very easily. The only skill licensed workers are the electrician and the plumber.
4. R20 or higher insulation rated. Already insulated with high density foam and Plastic shell.
5. Earthquake proof – build with Steel Frames throughout the whole house.
6. Fire retardant to Fire proof – Plastic shell is sprayed with concrete layer.
7. Water resisted – All walls panels were filled with foam and sealed with no leakage from water or air.
8. 20 years warranty with a life expectancy of 100 years.
9. Ultra Violet Rays protected.
10. Virtually no maintenance in compare with wood frames housing.
11. Pest proof
12. Rot proof
13. Withstand winds of 200 mph
14. Can set up and livable same day
15. Light weight – Weighs about 50% less than wood structures. It can protect people from other falling objects as it does not tear apart into smaller pieces.
16. Can be Life saving – the panels are built in 4’ x 8’ or 4’ x 12’ with steel frame, foam and plastic shelf. It will float in water and protect people as shields.
17. Non Toxic
18. Re-Cyclable materials.
19. Patented in over 142 countries

Murchtech Modular Homes – Why it is good?

There are many modular home manufacturers all over the world. If you type in the title at Google, you will find many postings. However, their costs are higher and methods they used are not energy ECO. Many use steel containers to build but got their hand tied up with the standard container sizes for the designs and with the Steel metal frames, which is heavy and can be heated up like an oven.  Surely, you can put insulation to it but also increases the costs, too.

Murchtech uses Composite Steel Technology that reduces the cost of steel but give the construction the same strength with the proper insulation to protect people from water, wind, fire, heat and earthquake. The best of all, it reduces the time to build and the material cost are lesser. Check out more information at the Blog from previous date and from the www.murchtech.com site. You will see what I mean.

Quick to build or rebuild a safe home from natural disasters at an affordable cost. Ask why the Chileans and Haitians are using the Murchtech technology to rebuild their housing.

Groupons and other coupons offering

It seems that everyone now goes with Groupon who works with the service sectors to give deep discount to consumers and many others to follow or copy the business model.

While this is great for the consumer who were able to take advantages for the deals, the consumers are also taking a risk that the service provider may not be able to support the deal as they all seems to not making any money and in fact, some are losing money.

So, what may happen is that, either you, the consumer, will wait a long time for the service or if the company went belly up before your turn, you will lose the money you put in.

So, who is giving you, the consumer, the protection or payback. I doubted very much that this kind of loss would be recovered.

Sorry, not to put a cold shower for the business but think before you purchase the coupons to make sure they can delivery the services as promised.

Don’t get me wrong. I do like the business idea and it is an improvement from the old Entertainment or Solid Gold book to reduce paper and printing costs with the buyers doing all the printings.

Happy Chinese New Year to You

The Chinese New Year day lands on Feb 3, 2011. As such, the Chinese communities are busy having parties, parades and celebrations.

In Vancouver, Chinese communities are quite large. Not only has the local Chinese celebrate the Chinese New Year; other Chinese descendants from around the world also celebrate the Year of the Rabbit in Vancouver. VBNF attended the 2011 Spring Festival, hosted by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver in Chinatown last night. We will also be attending another group from the Malaysia, Singapore, and Borneo association in Feb.

Of course there will be a number of activities around Vancouver featuring Parade in Chinatown and other celebrations at the shopping centers in Richmond, Burnaby and many others.  See events at:

Last night’s event was filled with joy and happiness. Among some of the VIPs were, the Vancouver’s City Mayor, Gregor Robertson, Richard Lee, MLA, Jenny Kwan, MLA, Raj Chouhan, MLA and many of the community leaders. Over 600 guests were invited to the party. I was quite happy to taste the Chinese liquor that was recently brought into BC that was smooth with clear fresh fragrant that I used to have in Hong Kong.

I love my blog

Thanks to my web designer who set up this Blog for me so I can freely write anything I like at any time and have no need to wait for the newsletter to come out.

In the Blog, I will talk about different things that I would like to share with each others. We do get a bit good comments from the “strangers” who surf the web.  Well we do know how to work with the search engines too, so there is a little bit advantage to get people to see our stuff.

Well, what I would like to say today is that: the Entertainment book and Solid Gold is out and online Coupons are in. There are many websites are offering coupons that you can buy online for a limited time at great discount.

We used some of those and got good results. This coupon services are more used by the companies who are in the consumer service sectors like: Spa, Restaurants, Health clubs, Cleaners, Car services, Dentist, Massage, Opticals, etc.  It is not cheap for the service providers though as they will only receive half of the money collected but still have to provide the services which have been deeply discounted. In other words, they are not making any money.

So why, they are doing it? It is just like advertising. However, this is the most effective advertising that will achieve results.

1. You get paid upfront before you provide the service. This means now you can have the cash flow to run your business You now have the money to stock up your supplies from customers who already pay for the service.

2. Getting more customers to come to your store from anywhere. People who may live far away from your location may now come to try your service since it is a good deal. You will now attract more walk in customers when they see your place is now full but did not know about the coupon the company is offering.

3. People now a day looks for bargain before they will come. that is why we have flyers and specials that come to your home everyday from the grocery stores or drug stores or the electronics store. It works. When you see a bargain you will go there. Then all a sudden, you may become their regulars.

VBNF has already got the website set up to give you all the coupons from the major department stores. Visit us or bookmark to find good deals there.

VBNF Blog – Jan 24, 2011

Welcome to our new Blog. VBNF Blog is built to bring you the latest information from VBNF as soon as it happens. We decide to do this so you do not need to wait for the issuance of our newsletters.

At the same time, I will talk about different topics that can affect you or your family. We will use the Blog to send you informal information like talking to you in person. This way, we do not have to be bounded by the format we used for the official newsletters.

Of course, we would also welcome your comments and suggestions. We received lots of encouragement from the audience from Facebook, Linked In, Plaxo, Twitter and YouTube when we introduced our new VBNFVideo and VBNFPhoto Sites.

Sometimes we may use articles or videos or photos that may have been published. As such, we like to thank the people who put them up in the public domain so we can use them to share with everyone we know. I believe there are many things going on that not everyone would know so by highlighting some of the stuff we know, we hope that would bring some value to you to enhance your life. After all, we do know much about what is going on in China and other places that may affect our business.

I would like to bring your attention to:
Low Cost Modular Home/building for the future

Modular is a way to build a system. By doing it modularly, we can specialize in the module and do a good job in a smaller scale. This way of work has been used in Building systems including software and hardware. Software means the programming or computer processing for a particular application. Hardware can be anything from housing, buildings, cars, packaging, logistic, transportation, airplanes, ships, machines, etc.

But modular building only just started to get popular. You can see that if you can build all the piece parts in a control environment, you should be able to do things faster with more accuracy. So the waste of material should be minimized especially when you are talking to build houses in the open that is affected by the weather.

Depending on the technology you are using, the material cost may be same but the labour cost should be lesser. If you do use the Murchtech product, then you can save the material cost for a more solid building than from using wood panels.

If we build houses like building cars, you can imagine that how quick you can build the house with standard design in a couple days. Of course, you need to do a good job on the engineering and the design. So the construction guys can just assemble each house in short time.

China just built a 15 storey building in 90 hours. See the video for yourself. It is the same idea with Murchtech.

Ark Hotel in China Construction time lapse building 15 storeys in 6 days

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps0DSihggio

How the Arabs building a modular home in a few days:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQg4QtlUwMU&NR=1&feature=fvwp

While it seems to be quick to build something very fast that meets all safety standards, let’s not forget that this can only be done with precise engineering and craft work at the control environment of the in house factory that is not affected by weather conditions. Precision installation and building methodology are the keys to a successful construction. Of course, there are many ways to build a construction. However, this sets the standard for fast construction and we can build our future homes like assembling furniture we buy from Ikea®.

Mark my word, the world of construction is going to shock the world.

Flaherty details new mortgage rules
Bill Curry and Grant Robertson, The Globe and Mail
7:20 AM, E.T. | January 17, 2011
Canadian, Economy, Real Estate

Concern over rising consumer debt levels is prompting Ottawa to make three new changes to Canada’s mortgage rules.

Maximum Mortgage amortization periods have been reduced to 30 years from 35 years.
The maximum amount Canadians can borrow to refinance their mortgages will be lowered to 85 per cent from the current 90 per cent.

The government will withdraw its insurance backing on lines of credit secured on homes, such as home equity lines of credit. These changes are going to mainly affect first time home buyers in the large urban centers like Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary. More….
